It's time for some SEO tricks, tools, techniques and free resources!

If you are a blogger, a website designer, or a marketing professional utilizing internet media (and who doesn't), Jayde has come up with an on-site SEO analysis tool. As you well know, every page of every site you create and publish must be search engine optimized so it can be found. Only then do you receive the golden opportunity to prove that your content is worth returning to or subscribing to.

Following is an extract from a bulletin which I received from Jayde (the SEO listing service people) a short while ago, and I wanted to share it with you:

Dear Jayde Member,

If you've just completed your website's design, or simply want to
give your current site a double take, then try this On-Page Analysis

Please remember that before you can build up a significant viewer base, email list, following or personal brand, the people roaming around cyberspace (that's pretty much all of us) have to be aware that you are broadcasting.

Search engine optimization is a technique and a tool for assuring that your online presence will receive the exposure necessary to ignite a fire. Not only should you set up to be optimized, you should constantly monitor your analytics (i.e., your site's metrics) to be certain that you are continuously search engine-friendly. It might take some tweaking from time-to-time, but it is well worth it. Time and money (very little) spent on SEO yield a tremendous return on investment (ROI) over the life of your publication or project.

Increased Download Speed: Supersized Rankings!

Share this ARTICLE with your colleagues on LinkedIn .

There are a number of reasons to be very interested in accelerating your blog or website's load speed. Faster Download Time has become increasingly important in a multi-tasking, overworked and increasingly impatient world.

Firstly, you should constantly have user (i.e., prospective site visitor) experience in mind when optimizing your website. A fast, full-screen download, especially for the home page of your site, is crucial to capture and keep a prospective visitor's attention.

If your site is very slow to appear (leaving the prospective visitor to look at a blank screen and to wonder whether his or her browser or internet connection is working properly), or is slow to fully download (it comes down in disjointed pieces, with entire graphics, or other dazzling effects to fill in boxes which remain blank or empty for quite some time), it is likely that your prospect will go back to the search engine results (or to wherever he or she received your url from) and look at the next site following or before yours on the list. In either way, you will have reduced your SEO prominence and lost a possible friend, member, follower, or customer.

Secondly, search engine rating algorithms give some credence, i.e., credibility ranking as well as prominence in positioning, to how fast your page loads. Faster is considered to be better.
With this Website Speed Test provided by JAYDE B2B and Directory Listing Services (http://www.jayde.com/) a superb site search engine listing service and resource provider for SEO tools, tips and strategies, you can discover the speed of your site:

http://www.submitplus.com/freetools/tools/website-speed-test/

Some quick tips to expedite your page load speed and give your prospective viewers a better, more captivating experience. Some of these tips may involve some informational or design sacrifices, but the end result will more than justify the modifications. This list is being furnished by Douglas E. Castle for Blogging Tips, Tricks And Tools. It is not intended to be complete, nor is it warranted or otherwise guaranteed to produce favorable results for any individuals blog or website. I will say, that some of these have certainly been helpful for me.

1. Minimize the number and placement of high-resolution graphics Use clickable thumbnails instead, if possible) on your home page. Limited the number of any embedded videos to as few as possible, and position the video between the header and the "fold" at the bottom of your page.

2. Use the smallest number of lines of java script or HTML code, and use a code shrinking program if you can to compress these even further.

3. Avoid the use of pop-ups, pop-overs, modals, and especially long iframe forms in the body of your content.

4. Minimize your use of flash effects or remotely hosted buttons or text effects.

5. If you have graphs, charts, PowerPoint displays, slideshows, galleries and the like, just show the first frame, and give the viewer the option as to whether or not to see the presentation.

6. Avoid ambient music playing in the background. In my opinion, you should especially avoid the theme from "Hawaii Five-O" (even though I really like this one myself), heavy metal music in general, and the repetitive theme song from David Bowie's "Under Pressure." They slow download time, can be highly distracting, and can occasionally be offensive enough to the fatigued ears of the viewer that he or she feels that your sight is going to be a pure advertorial nightmare.

7. Break large paragraphs of copy into numbered or bulletized lists -- if further explanations are required, either put them into mouseover balloons, or into mouseover tooltips. Keep them brief, and never, ever, set them up so that the viewer has to click on an "x" or "Close" cue to to make a balloon or tooltip disappear. Everyone HATES this.

8. If a portion of your site will take a longer time to load, or will require some element of scrolling, make a note of it, and apologize in advance to your reader.

9. Avoid excessively large or florid fonts or designs. Elaborate wallpapers and borders are a waste and a distraction. They also can slow your downloading time significantly.

10. Keep your opening or home page as lean and mean as possible -- you can then direct your viewer (once you've captured his or her attention) to see the site in its entirety by using a clear, simple navigation bar under your header. Once you've caught his or her interest, then it's merely a matter of leading him or her around your site to see what you have to offer.

p.s. The little "click on me" birdie which follows actually slowed the downloading speed of this article (as it appears on the blog) by 6.67%! You might click on it anyway, just to learn from my negative example...

Related (And Occasionally Dated) Articles For Your Further Reference:

Do everything possible to make your home page or first page download as rapidly as possible in order to increase site rankings, SEO prominence and to offer the overworked viewer the quickest aspect to your most important message. This is one of those exceptional cases in marketing where substance actually means more than form.

In dealing with viewers, both human and algorithmic/robotic, it is crucial to first capture their attention before you can deliver your words of wisdom. As my great grandfather once said (this is purely anecdotal, and likely a lie, but is a "politically expedient lie" because it cannot be verified one way or another), "If the letter don't arrive, they ain't gonna read it." - DC

Zemanta - Free Tool For SEO

Share this ARTICLE with your colleagues on LinkedIn .

Zemanta is an incredible tool (you can download it for free at http://www.zemanta.com/) for use in enriching your blog's SEO, search engine prominence, potential audience, stickiness, inbound links, quality of content and, of course, traffic. In writing this article, I reference another article [see below] which I recently wrote about Comcast Cable. All I did was whine a bit --- Zemanta, my not-so-silent partner, automatically suggested in-text links, tags, and a listing of related articles. The little piece that follows was the result of what I'll call this Zemantification - which latter term is a Lingovation I am proud to call my very own.

- DC

---------------

Comcast Cable perhaps establishes an all-time minimum in customer service and customer satisfaction standards. As I've said before, if they would invest 10% of their baloney-laden "Xfinity Triple Play" advertising budget (you'd be far better off with a triple coronary bypass) in improvements to outdated, overloaded infrastructure and engineering, they might actually be rendering a service worth some percentage of what they charge.

I don't believe that will actually do this unless there is a massive class action lawsuit or a major incursion by the FCC or some other regulatory agency eager to promote its own visibility.

As I was working on building this site (http://comcastcomplaint.wordpress.com/), my connection with the internet actually deteriorated, and I felt compelled to call the folks over at Comcast (on my AT&T iPhone line) and invite one of their technical specialists over to my humble abode for a look-see. As I was vituperatively venting (that's alliteration!), it occurred to me to share the following image with those of you who have come to know about ...The Comcast Caper...

Please click on the image below to see how I am, in my capacity as the internet-compromised and impatient chairman of a promising young company (TNNWC Group, LLC), earning a spare time income while others continue to merely whine and swear...missing out on a true entrepreneurial opportunity. Again -- please clck on the image to see it displayed in its amazing, high-resolution splendor on a separate screen. You'd better hurry...cable connectivity is spotty!

Faithfully,

Douglas Castle

Blogging - Choose The Best Blogging Platform (Or Several)

Share this ARTICLE with your colleagues on LinkedIn .

Entrepreneurs, Webmasters and Bloggers - Which Blogging Platform Is Best For You?

It's an issue that must be addressed: If you sell a product, provide a service, run an e-commerce site or moderate an interactive forum, you have a choice of blogging platforms. These include Blogger, WordPress, Typepad and a number of others.
Blogger is the easiest to use, is completely modularized, but does not offer much in the way of service to SEO and publicize (or to otherwise enrich) your blog and posts. But then, being a cynic, I believe that since Blogger is owned by Google (as are many blogging accessories, applications and tools), that Google might secretly have a bit of extra juice programmed into its ranking algorithm (which is as secret as the Coca Cola recipe) which favors the .blogspot (Blogger) crowd. By the way, here's some interesting trivia -- while I cannot give you the recipe for Coca Cola, I can say that the recipe for Dr. Pepper is identical to the one for Coca Cola, with the addtion of one ingredient -- and that ingredient is prune juice. Hence the unofficial nickname for the beverage: "Dr. Pooper."
Their Blogger templates are limited, they have a knack for freezing up just before you've saved or published your post, so that you must back up your work, and they are not too friendly in terms of snagging graphics, weird fonts and hyperlinks from the other media which you may to choose to copy and paste from. Their "outages" are quite frequent.
WordPress is a bit tougher to use (at first), but it gives you a website-quality blog, with all of the bells and whistles you could want. It will even suggest informational in-text hyperlinks, tags, and connect you seamlessly with social media.
It has many "automatic content enhancers" and helpful tools that make a much fancier blog post quite simple to produce, once you've gotten the hang of using the Wordpress platform. WordPress is ideal for copying and pasting material from other media in direct, "true" form -- this includes everything from website excerpts, graphics, emails, MS Word files, spreadsheets and charts. Blogger does not generally let you embed forms and tables as easily as does WordPress, so you invariably find yourself playing McGyver (however he spells it) and creating workarounds. Some folks like this -- I don't, and I believe that those people who do should either be institutionalized or come to work for TNNWC.

Comments and inbound hyperlinks are much more "attracted" to WordPress, and WordPress has built in tools to encourage more vigorous sharing, forwarding and interaction. WordPress does not have as many "technical timeouts" as Blogger, and it is easier to save and edit your drafts.
I use both Blogger and WordPress. I have toyed around a bit with Typepad, but it seems to be running a distant third in this platform popularity contest, and I am content with my back and forth mix of Blogger and WordPress, at least for the present; then again, it may also be possible that my brain is now at full capacity, and that I don't have any place to store any newly-acquired knowledge intracranially at all.
I am writing this article on WordPress at this time, because Blogger is "having some trouble." Alas. I have copied a recently BLOGGER STATUS chronology (a litany of notifications, apologies, and excuses), starting from today (05.13.2011) on backwards in recent history. I used a clever workaround to accomplish this. I also used the color maroon for angry emphasis...

Postmortem for Blogger Service Interruption on March 16 By Jinwoo Lee, Blogger Software Engineer.
As we committed to you, when serious service interruptions occur we will provide you details about what went wrong and what we’re doing to help prevent similar problems in the future.
From about 9:55 AM PDT until about 10:20 AM on Wednesday, March 16, all Blogger users were unable to access the Blogger dashboard page at www.blogger.com and draft.blogger.com. No data was lost and Blogspot was not affected at all, so your blog’s readers weren’t impacted.
We made brief status updates on our Twitter account — this and this. Meanwhile, we kept a close eye on the reports coming through our help forum and Twitter stream.
The problem was caused by human error. We wanted to show a small announcement on the Blogger dashboard and our code for it had a bug, which caused the problem. Once we figured this out, we quickly reverted the change.
We are truly sorry for any inconveniences this might have caused you. In the meantime, we will try harder to make Blogger a more reliable service.

Thanks for your patience in the meantime.
Update: This has been resolved.

[Note by Douglas Castle regarding above "Blogger Chronology": Please bear in mind that there are actually numerous mini-outages or short-term catastrophes which occur at least once weekly on Blogger which are not mentioned on the above list. Happily, these are usually mere inconveniences, and will not cause a loss of data or any irreversible damage which will force you to re-post]

Communicating With Pictures - Visual Stimuli

Your readers LOVE visual stimuli. A picture (especially one that is well-captioned) can be worth somewhere between 140 characters and a thousand words.

On a serious note, they make your posts more memorable, more likely to be forwarded or re-published, and more likely to be preferentially-referenced on the almighty search engines.
