Blogging Entrepreneurs, Even The Self-Professed "Pros," Occasionally Must Wage War Against The Very Technology Which Feeds Them!

Share this ARTICLE with your colleagues on LinkedIn .

Man! What a blog title. It got your attention, didn't it. It was a fine piece of messaging, keyword-jamming and wit...all in combination. But small business bloggers, e-commerce neophytes (those are not those things which live in the nail beds under your toenails for goshsakes!)publishers, cybercommerce business hopefuls and even the occasional megalomaniac (the kind of maverick who publishes stuff without even using Spelllcheck) gets bruised while experimenting with social media technology and broadcasting the buzz. Let my sad post, which follows, serve as lesson to all of us... - Douglas Castle

Dear Readers (Entrepreneurs, TNNWC Members, Colleagues, Business Leaders, Innovators, Project Managers, Commanders of Growing Companies, Braintenancers, Global Futurists, Internationalists, Marketers, Trend-Watchers, Trend-Setters, and Friends):

Subject: Douglas Castle Apologies for An Annoying Technical Glitch.

Q: Conspiracy or Catastrophic Compound Error?

It's simple. I am not certain whether it was due to a deadly conspiracy involving a collaborative effort among Twitterfeed, Hellotxt and Ping, or whether it was the result of an extremely unlikely catastrophic compound error (Do I sound paranoid? Are you talkin' to me?), but my status updates have been prodigiously posting themselves to many of my blogs without my knowledge or consent.

Since this began two days ago, I have had a "Blue Ribbon Panel" of "experts" working on solving the problem, and after much debate (mostly over who would be responsible to pay for lunches, and how much of a gratuity we should give the delivery kid), they have assured me that the mechanism has been repaired.

I sincerely apologize for any inconvenience that this may have caused you, and I thank you for your patience and for reading me and my guest contributors.

Faithfully, and in the spirit of friendship,

Douglas Castle

Smart Websites and Smart Blogs: Comply With The Law and Best Practices.

Share this ARTICLE with your colleagues on LinkedIn .

Dear Fellow Bloggers (and Website Owners):

For every business of every size, your planning, your presentation and your conduct is governed by some set of laws, regulations and actual quality standards. This is not to intimidate you. It is to inform you.

1.If your website or blog has an advice orientation, be certain that you have your overpriced and seldom-available attorney include (let him or her draft it for you, word for word, and save the invoice) the necessary exculpatory language and on your blog and posts (as necessary) to avoid a litigious reader who takes your advice and winds up claiming injury or loss...and wants to either take you to court (i.e., the cleaners), or to prison (so that you may help feed a thriving American industry).

2. Have your attorney review your blogs and websites for compliance with regulations and laws at frequent intervals.

3. Constantly puruse the websites and blogsites of the best publishers that you can find to look for formatting, compliance and other trends. This bit of research will not only provide you with some great ideas, but it will give you insight into current "best practices" in webbery and bloggery.

Now...entrepreners, e-commerce folk, granstanders and other writers with passion, purpose and a growing audience, please read on, and take what is being said quite seriously:

Respectfully, and in friendship,

Douglas Castle
Chairman and CEO

  • Website pitfalls that could land your company in court
Maintaining a website is essential for any business that hopes to compete in the 21st century, but ensuring that it's up to snuff requires more than just making sure all the links work, Bill Baker writes. Baker offers advice to protect your business: Make sure you regularly update your website's privacy policy, take a hands-off approach to your site's comments page and consult a lawyer before you launch a mobile application. Bloggers: Google Is Not Your Master!

Share this ARTICLE with your colleagues on LinkedIn .

Dear Bloggers, Both Accomplished and Aspiring:

GOOGLE is not your master. If you re-construct your blog posts and re-format all of your work to "Search Engine Optimize" you blogs, you are probably also accomplishing the following dubious objectives:

1) Creating awkward "word salad" that doesn't reflect the way you think or write naturally.

2) Compromising your brilliant vocabulary and "dumbing down" your clever expressions to imbecilic "Keywords."

3) Putting your blog's quality on a par with that of everyone else's. Instead of rising up the ranks, you are putting yourself in the same cinderblock cell as your would-be competition.

4) Losing your natural readers - those people who read your posts because of their subject, style and personality...while gaining a few "visits" from sightseers who will not be impressed with your stilted style and lack of originality.

5) Contributing toward society's decline toward complete superficiality and illiteracy [and I'm an optimist!].

You are the master of your mind, and how you express your unique thoughts.

Faithfully, and In Fellowship,

Douglas Castle

Blogging With Integrity.

Share this ARTICLE with your colleagues on LinkedIn .

Blogging With Integrity

Dear Bloggers, Bloggerettes, Blogmeisters, Blogblitzers and Mortals:

The fact is, when you blog with integrity (authenticity, passion, originality, personality and frequency), you will likely attract more readers.

1. Write about what interests YOU.

2. Write about it from your own point of view.

3. Write the way you would speak with a friend -- use your own words (try, however, for more than one syllable per word on the average).

4. If you feel strongly or passionately about your topic, let it out. Rave. Cry. Shout. Denounce. Support. Be emotional. Use your metaphorical heart as well as your wonderful mind. Be a PERSON with a PERSONALITY.

5. Write as frequently as you can. Your articles don't have to be long, but put a gold nugget into each one -- even if the whole post is merely one paragraph in length. Don't let your readers think that you have lost interest in them.

Get blogging!

Faithfully,

Douglas Castle
